How to make your website look good when shared in Telegram and WhatsApp
Most people will first see your site as a link in a chat. Telegram, WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack build a preview card for it from a few tags in the page's code, called Open Graph tags. Without them the preview is a bare link or a random piece of text from the page.
The tags
These go into the head of the home page:
<meta property="og:title" content="Piano lessons in Valencia">
<meta property="og:description" content="Lessons for children and adults, at the studio or online.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://your-site-address/preview.png">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
You do not have to write them. Ask the agent:
Add Open Graph tags to the home page: title, description and a preview image of 1200×630 pixels. Use the site's full address in og:image.
The preview image
- 1200×630 pixels is the common size for a large card.
- Keep the important part in the middle. Some apps crop the edges.
- Keep it light, a few hundred kilobytes. Some messengers skip heavy images.
- A full address.
og:imagemust start withhttps://. A short path such aspreview.pngdoes not work in many apps. The agent knows your site's address as soon as the site is created, so it can fill it in.
The agent can make the picture too: "Make a 1200×630 preview image with the site's name and main photo."
What aiput.site fills in for you
When you publish, the home page gets an og:url tag with your site's address. The title, description and picture are yours to choose.
Refreshing a preview after changes
Messengers remember a preview and do not check the page every time. After you change the picture or the title:
- Telegram: send the link to the bot
@WebpageBot, and it refreshes the preview. - Facebook: Meta's Sharing Debugger has a Scrape Again button.
- LinkedIn: the Post Inspector does the same.
- WhatsApp: there is no refresh tool; the new preview appears after a while. If you cannot wait, share the link with
?v=2added to the end — the page opens the same, but the messenger treats it as a new link.
Check before you share
Send the link to yourself first — Saved Messages in Telegram, or a chat with your own number in WhatsApp — and look at the card the way your contacts will see it.
