What is in your website folder? index.html, CSS and JavaScript in plain words
Your AI agent made a website, and now there is a folder with files you did not write: index.html, style.css, script.js, an images folder. You do not need to learn to code to work with them, but knowing what each one does makes it much easier to ask for changes and to spot problems.
index.html: the page itself
HTML is the content and structure of a page: headings, paragraphs, buttons, images, links. index.html is the home page — the file a web server opens when someone visits your address. Other pages have their own files, such as about.html or prices/index.html.
Open index.html in a text editor and you will see your text between tags like <h1> and <p>. You can even fix a typo there yourself.
CSS: how it looks
CSS files, such as style.css, describe the look: colours, fonts, sizes, spacing, and how the layout changes on a phone. When you ask the agent for "a darker header" or "bigger text on mobile", it mostly edits CSS. Sometimes the styles sit inside the HTML file instead of a separate file; that works the same.
JavaScript: what moves
JavaScript files (.js) make the page do things: open a menu, slide a gallery, count down to a date. Many landing pages need little or none. The code runs in the visitor's browser, not on a server.
Images, icons and fonts
- Images: usually PNG, JPG, WebP, SVG or GIF files, often in an
imagesfolder. - Icons: the small picture in the browser tab is a favicon, usually
favicon.ico, PNG or SVG. - Fonts: WOFF or WOFF2 files, if the site uses its own fonts instead of loading them from a service.
How the files find each other
The HTML refers to the other files by their paths: images/photo.webp means "the file photo.webp in the images folder next to me". These paths are relative to the page, so the folder works the same on your computer and on the internet — as long as everything the page uses is inside the folder.
What does not belong in the folder
Notes, design mockups, videos, PDFs, Word documents and the agent's own settings. They are not part of the website, and aiput.site refuses a publication that contains files it does not publish. Keep them elsewhere, or keep the website in a subfolder of its own.
What to do with this knowledge
- Ask for changes in the right words: "change the button colour in the CSS".
- When something breaks online, check the obvious first: is the file in the folder, is the name exactly the same?
