How to embed a YouTube video and a Google Map on your website

A short video about your work and a map to your door answer questions faster than any text. On a static site you do not upload them: you embed them from YouTube or Google Maps. That is also the only way to show video on aiput.site, which does not publish video files.

Embed a YouTube video

  1. Open the video on YouTube and choose Share, then Embed.
  2. Copy the code. It starts with <iframe.
  3. Give it to the agent: "Embed this YouTube video in the About section, full width, keeping its proportions on phones."

The agent makes the video responsive: on a phone it shrinks with the screen instead of sticking out.

Keep the page fast

A YouTube embed loads a lot of code even if nobody presses Play. Two ways to avoid that:

  • Lazy loading: the video loads only when the visitor scrolls to it. Ask for loading="lazy" on the embed.
  • A preview image instead of the player: the page shows the video's thumbnail with a play button, and loads the real player only on click. Ask the agent for "a lightweight YouTube embed that loads the player on click".

Privacy

A normal YouTube embed lets YouTube set cookies as soon as the page opens. YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode uses the address youtube-nocookie.com and sets them only when the visitor plays the video. Ask the agent to use it. If your site has a cookie consent banner, embedded video is one of the things it should cover.

Embed a Google Map

  1. Find your place in Google Maps, choose Share, then Embed a map.
  2. Pick a size and copy the code.
  3. Ask the agent to put it in the Contacts section, full width and lazily loaded.

On a phone, an embedded map is small and awkward to move around. Add a button under it — "Open in Maps" — that opens the place in the phone's maps app. Often that button alone is enough, and the page stays lighter.

Other embeds

The same way works for Vimeo videos, Spotify players, Instagram posts, Google Forms and booking calendars: the service gives you an embed code, and the agent places it. Each embed loads code from another company, so use the ones that earn their place.

What cannot be embedded

Video files of your own — MP4 and similar — cannot be published on aiput.site. Upload them to YouTube or Vimeo, as unlisted if you prefer, and embed from there.

For events, a map and a schedule go together: see a website for your event.
